IIM Indore five year programme

IIM-I's five year programme in management has drawn a response from the AICTE. The regulator believes that IIM-I can't offer a degree at the end of the third year, as promised, because it does not have the power to grant degrees. IIM I has clarified that it will grant a diploma as all the IIMs do with their post-graduate programme. (The IIMs are not covered by any Act of parliament, unlike the IITs, and hence do not have the power to grant degrees).

IIM-I's 3+2 offering (undergrad courses plus MBA), after the 12th standard, will be watched with interest. It is the first ever attempt by an IIM to move into the undergrad space. It also offers students an entry into the MBA programme without facing the huge odds of CAT. The undergrad courses will cover, not just business management, but several elements of liberal arts, history, literature etc, as also IT.

There has long been talk, endorsed by the Yash Pal committee, of the IIMs becoming full-fledged universities. The issue has been one of scale as well as scope. If IIM-I can show that it can deliver quality in a broad-based undergrad programme, it will be a feather in its cap and it could be the forerunner of similar programmes from others, including the IIMs.

Sir,

Do you think it is even appropriate to study business management in undergrad? I know there are such courses in the world, but it is so wrong IMHO. How would a 12th std graduate relate to business? Moreover, shouldn't business education be built on top of a professional course? Just because you have a brand, it does not mean you should sell everything you can under that brand. Education is not a product - a product can be replaced, repaired... you cant do that with education. I hope sense prevails in IIMI

This will make IIMI look more like Amity and IIPMs of the world

Anonymous, I am not sure about other schools but the University of Texas has a very strong undergraduate business school. In fact, it is the most difficult undergraduate school to get into in the university. And most of my friends who graduated from there, did get recruited by various companies.

IIMs should be granted autonomous status to work as full fledge university to compete with many foreign universities which are going to enter in India.
And if we look at 50-100 year perspective, education sector is going to be highly competitive as it is in USA, and IIMs and IITs should be allowed to develop to face the foreign entrants.

I must congratulate IIM Indore for such a great programme. All good and nice programmes are being criticized in our country. The sad part is that the education is not taken as education and now it has become huge business. The present government is helpless and have no control on the crop of useless institutes like IIPM and Amity. In my opinion all IIMs should become Universities. The five year MBA is already in existence at Narsee Monjee and many other institutes. I also feel that other IIMs will also follow this move of IIM Indore soon and that will be great.

Is IIM-Indore taking a leaf from 'blue ocean strategy'?

It is relatively a new entrant in the IIM arena. It is thus pursuing a strategy with a creative approach. It is breaking from current status quo of management education in India, and trying a novel approach.

Well only time will tell!

IIM.I should be congratulated for this bold step. It is ridiculous to say that the management courses can not be digested by a +2 student. If one can appear for medicine, engineering or law this can also be achieved.

Its a very good move, unneccessarily students are ducked to engineering degrees and then they are again going for MBA, where the whole profession changes, I must say that its what all other institutes also must do, so that willing candidates can undertake such courses.

IIM-Indore should take entrance tests(5-year integrated programme) in the month of June.I have noticed that it is conducted very late , when all other admissions are over........ students get confused...whether to wait for IIM's results or take admission elsewhere.

I am a student of this ipm program and I really feel proud to be a part of this Institute..the teachers here are ACTUALLY superb..they are really working hard to make this course a grand success..they have been telling us that they prepare for hours before they come for lectures and this is seen in their lectures too...I think its foolish to assume that a +2 cannot study management course..we were obviously not taught management subjects from day 1,rather we have been taught to develop a management thinking while dealing with various problems..this would eventually lead us to become better managers, since we would be doing this for 5 yrs..for those who are aspiring to be a part of this program all I wanna say is that this course will only provide you a platform where you can get knowledge and exposure, it's you who have to extract the crux out of it..if you wanna make your life and become someone you have to work hard and burn your midnight oil..there is no one here forcing you to do that..that motivation has to come from within, only then you can benefit from this course. If you wanna study for knowledge and not just for a degree or a job,but to make something of yourself..this is the perfect course for you..and believe me we have the power to prove ourselves best managers..(even better than the pgp s)(no doubt pgp s have put far more efforts to reach here and are the best of all ..as they have been able to get IIMI..but we can be better than them) that's what I believe..

NICE BLOG!!! Investment in a Business Management program is much more beneficial compared to investment in other academic programs. Perhaps, more so in the current situation of recession. Thanks for sharing a nice information.
